Starting with the basic meaning of the word, philosophy means love of wisdom. To be a philosopher you must be a lover of wisdom. This is a very broad way to look at philosophy. Once a philosophy professor said that a subject leaves the realm of philosophy when it starts to produce consistent answers. Meaning that once consistent empirical evidence has been established it stops being philosophy. People become less focused on broad ideas and start to specialize.

Aristotle writes on a large range of subjects ranging from the nature of friendship, how to organize societies, to the laws and relationships of matter which we call now physics. Eventually people started to find patterns that they later established as laws and this is when philosophy, according to the professor, wipes her hands clean of the subject. not completely obviously because all wisdom and knowledge ties into themselves. first it is stated philosophy is the love of wisdom.
then it is referred to as "she"

knowledge is the understanding of things.

wisdom is the application of knowledge.

the man who knows, but dosnt apply is foolish.

the man who knows, and applies, is wise.

philosophy is asking the question.
ask the question, learn and understand, follow the truth that comes from understanding, and live with wisdom.
